Designing Atmosphere: How We're Building the World of Project EOV

A behind-the-scenes look at how we approach atmosphere, lighting, and mood in Project EOV — our upcoming dark puzzle game for two players.

Atmosphere isn’t just a feature in Project EOV — it is the game. Every shadow, every flicker of light, every sound tells you something about the manor and what’s lurking inside. Today, we want to share how we think about atmosphere and why it matters.

The Mantra: Atmosphere Before Mechanics

In most games, mechanics come first — you design the gameplay loop, then dress it up. We’re doing the opposite. We started with a feeling:

What if walking through a manor felt like holding your breath?

That feeling drives every decision. Puzzle mechanics exist to deepen the mood, not the other way around.

Lighting as Storytelling

Light in Project EOV isn’t decorative — it’s narrative. Here’s how we approach it:

  • Shadows are characters. The Shadow entity isn’t just a gameplay mechanic. It’s a presence that the lighting communicates before you ever “encounter” it.

  • Darkness is information. What you can’t see matters as much as what you can. We use darkness to create tension and guide attention.

  • Twin players, twin lighting. Each player sees the world slightly differently. Your partner’s flashlight reveals things yours doesn’t, and vice versa.

Sound Design Philosophy

Sound design for Project EOV follows three principles:

  1. Less is more. We use silence as a tool. A quiet room that suddenly has one sound is scarier than a room full of ambient noise.

  2. Reactive audio. The Shadow responds to player behavior, and so does the soundscape. Trust meter changes shift the audio palette.

  3. Spatial storytelling. Where a sound comes from tells you something. Distant footsteps. A creak above you. The direction matters.

What’s Next

We’re currently in the middle of building the manor’s first major wing. In the next devlog, we’ll share more about the twin-controlled puzzle mechanics and how they reinforce the atmosphere we’re building.

"Atmosphere is everything. Wishlist Project EOV and experience it firsthand."
